Span of Control



           Span of Control is a concept of management which idecates the area or numbers of subordinates that is to be supervised managed and control by supervisor or managers. From the help of span of control, the management or organization can develop authorities, responsibilities relationship and control mechanism.
            The scope of span of control depends upon various factors like the capacity of the managers rules and regulation of the organization environment of business, capacity of sub-ordinates etc.
Major determinates or determining follows of span of control are as:-
I) Quality of managers/supervisors
            Physical qualities educational qualities, managerial qualities and other types of qualities of managers or supervisors can effect or determined the span of control.
II) Acceptation of subordinates
            The accepting capacity of subordinates can also determined the span of control that means the subordinates should be able to understand apply and evaluate the orders, instructions etc. received from the managers or supervisors.
III) Delegation of authority and decentralization
            In centralization practice the span of control can be widen but in the case decentralization the authority or controlling power of top level management decrease.
IV) Rules and regulation of the organization
            The rules and regulation one of the determining factors of span of control the rules and regulations provide authority and power to managers as well as sub-ordinates that impact the span of control.
V) Nature of work
            If the nature of work is similar than the span of control is found wider. In another hand if varieties of works are to be conducted then the small group of subordinates is can be manage and control.
VI) Timing and Control
            The time of operation of business may also efficient the degree of span of control. Different shift can be managed differently and some other events may also influence the span of control.
VII) Style of management
            Different style of management like autocratic, democratic, free rein -:jtGq_ style can impact or determined the span of control differently. In autocratic, span of control is widen but in democratic style top level manager cannot control a large number of subordinates.
VIII) Communication technique
            If the communication of different plans are utilized properly it helps the span of control in organization.
